Fly Fishing Rods – Tips for Choosing the Right One

Fly fishing can be a very exciting and rewarding sport, and many people enjoy getting involved in this sporting activity. There is the relaxation of being on your own on the water and the thrill of that first bite, not to mention the excitement of the fight to pull the fish in. However, to get all that done you have to make sure that you have a great rod. There are many fly fishing rods available on the market today; however, the following are a few tips that will help you choose the right one.

Tip #1 – Consider Going with Graphite – First of all, when you are picking out fly fishing rods, you may want to consider going with a rod made of graphite. This will be very pliable and light to hold as well. This is a high end material that is probably going to be a bit more expensive than some other types of materials; however, it is very durable and will offer you a smooth cast as well.

Tip #2 – Check the Action – Before you buy fly fishing rods, take a look at the action of the rod. You can find them in slow action, medium action, and fast action. If you are a beginner, then you are probably going to want to have a medium action rod. Sometimes a fast action rod can be the wrong choice since the tip may be too stiff for some types of fish.

Tip #3 – Look at Various Lengths – There are a variety of different lengths to consider when picking out fly fishing rods as well. You can find rods for fly fishing in lengths from four feet to eighteen feet. When you are picking out the length try to consider the water conditions and the weather you will be fishing in. If you are fishing in a tighter space, then consider going with a shorter rod.

Tip #4 – Find a Comfortable Grip – You will definitely want to be sure that you get a rod that has a comfortable grip. Try out different grip sizes and different grips shapes to find that one that is most comfortable for you. Also, make sure that the grip allows you to have good control over your rod as well.

Tip #5 – Try Casting Before You Buy – If you can, you may want to try casting a few different fly fishing rods before you buy so you can see which one works the best for you. Make sure that the line goes right out from the tip and does not bounce back at you, also make sure that there are no waves in the line as well.

Tip #6 – Consider Beginner’s Packages – If you happen to be a beginner, you may want to consider going with a beginner’s package that comes with a fly fishing rod, a good reel, and line. This allows you to get all the basics you need for a great price so you can get started.
